Xia Jixun, born in 1914, lives at No. 66, Nanxinzhuang North Street, Huaiyin District, Jinan City. In order to eat together, Xia Jixun joined the army to resist Japan in 1933. In 1937, Xia Jixun participated in the fiercest battle in the War of Resistance Against Japan—the Battle of Songhu . Afterwards, Xia Jixun was captured by the Japanese and held in Nanjing until the victory of the Anti-Japanese War. Xia Jixun is the only surviving veteran who has participated in the Battle of Songhu in Shandong Province. The old man often said that he was already happier than his sacrificed comrades in arms.

Songhu will defend the river, and my comrades will die in front of me

I was born in 1914 and fought around in that era. Our family lived in poverty. In order to save my family some rations, and also to "go out and eat," I went to Hubei with a few cousins when I was 19 and joined the army to fight against Japan.

I was assigned to the 13th Division of the 25th Army of the National Revolutionary Army as a heavy machine gunner. The machine gun is heavy, and two people need to be carried to the battlefield during the battle. It was this year (1933) that I fought the first battle of my life. For the next five years, I followed the large army and fought everywhere, fighting on the front as an infantry.

In 1937, the "8.31 Incident" took place in Shanghai, and the 13th Division called for the War of Resistance Against Japan. In September, the 13th Division arrived in Shanghai, and we participated in the Songhu Battle. We were ordered to guard a river, and it would take us two or three days to guard; the Japanese were also defending across the river. After that, the two sides opened fire. We fought that battle for a long time, and we fought miserably.

I was a soldier at 20 years old, and now I am 100 years old, 80 years old. Alas, the details of the battle at that time were unforgettable. I just remember that when fighting in Shanghai, the army killed many people. My comrades were killed in front of me. At the worst, two of ten people lived.

After the Battle of Songhu, I followed a large army to move to other battlefields. In 1943, our troops retreated to Yichang, Hubei. During the battle, I was accidentally captured by the Japanese, and then I was kept in Nanjing. When it was released, the Anti-Japanese War was victorious.

Later, I worked in the third brick and tile factory in Jinan. During the Cultural Revolution, our family was decentralized to the countryside and spent ten years in the countryside. Later I implemented the policy and I went back to the original unit until I retired.

I'm happier than my sacrificed comrade-in-arms

Compared with the old people around me, my body is tough. No problem with legs and feet, going upstairs and downstairs, walking and bending are all right; I used to go downstairs for a walk and play chess at noon every day. In recent years, I am getting older and I do n’t remember much, so I do n’t go out.

I have two sons and a daughter. My eldest daughter is 65 years old and my youngest child is 51 years old. The children are very filial, often come to see me, and come to clean up the housework regularly. I never eat anything at home.

Being able to live this old age, I think it is because I have a good mentality, and I rarely get angry. In fact, what's left to be able to survive the battlefield? Compared to those sacrificed comrades in arms, I am already very happy.

I like to read newspaper news. My eyes are not very good. I just use a magnifying glass to read. In the past few years, I also love to watch TV and listen to the radio. In recent years, I have lost my ears and can only read the newspaper.

I'm old and I can't remember the past, but when I watch the anti-Japanese movie on TV, I still remember the bits and pieces of that year. In the past, I often pointed to the TV to tell the children about the era of the War of Resistance Against Japan. I could tell exactly what year and month these TV events happened.

Fortunately, in recent years, the government has begun to recognize our people. At the 60th anniversary of the Anti-Japanese War, the government sent me a commemorative medal "Memorizing the 60th Anniversary of the Victory of the Chinese People's Anti-Japanese War and the World Anti-Fascist War". This is the only medal I have and I cherish it.
