Why should you not feed sugar water for hummingbirds?
Honey ferments and causes a deadly bacterium in hummingbirds. Table sugar most closely resembles the nectar found in flowers. This is the feeding method of choice by every hummingbird researcher I know. It is very important to clean your feeders out frequently in the summer heat.
What fruit do hummingbirds eat?
Hummingbirds like any juicy fruit that they can easily sip sugary liquid from. What is this? People have observed birds eating things like ripe berries, oranges, persimmons, watermelons, and prickly pears. The key is to pick pieces of fruit that are extra juicy and ripe.
Do hummingbirds just eat sugar water?
Hummingbirds do not live on sugar water and nectar alone. They eat insects and tiny spiders to supply protein and also feed on tree sap (see this great video).
